Setting new goals and making resolutions are not tasks restricted to the New Year, at any time of the day, week, month or year, you can set new fitness, wellbeing and lifestyle goals for yourself.

Maybe you want to kick-start your fitness journey? Perhaps you want to learn to play an instrument? Or simply allocate more alone time for self-discovery and personal development?

Whatever your motivation may be, we understand that taking those first steps to make a plan for self-development can be daunting, so to help you get started and to get you thinking, here are some ideas and tips for setting and achieving your goals, so that you too can become a GOAL GETTER!....

1. HEALTH & FITNESS GOALS

·       Do more exercise

This could be as simple as adding an extra day in the week at the gym, adding an extra 10 minutes to a session, or even just an extra sit-up during your abdominal workout. You could try using this 'Full Body Workout Pack - 2 Day Gym Routine' to help you get started!

·       Work towards a competitive run

Start small, perhaps a 5k, then work your way up to longer distances, alternatively, you can stick with the 5k distance and instead just work on improving your speed.

·       Get on your bike and cycle

Slow and steady for 20mins, or fast and high intensity for 10mins; you could even try a combination of both and make it an interval session.

·       Eat more fruit & veg

Consider adding a portion of mixed vegetables to every meal and setting specific times of the day to have a piece of fruit that you enjoy. To make life easier, why not try utilising a 'Weekly Meal Planner' to help you organise your daily meals better?

·       Take up yoga

Not only great for mobility and improving flexibility, yoga can also help with mindset and clarity of thought.

2. WELLBEING GOALS

·       Get more sleep

If you’re feeling unusually tired during earlier parts of the day and tend to stay up until late at night, consider going to bed 10mins earlier than normal, than gradually increase the time until you are getting an adequate amount of sleep to help you function at your best during the day.

·       Read (or listen to) more books

Aim for a target to aim for, for example, one book every month? One every quarter? Workout what works for you as a starting point and take one day at a time.

·       Make more ‘me-time’

As simple as it sounds, sometimes the best thing you can do to help improve your overall wellbeing, is to have more time for yourself to do things you love or perhaps to simply do nothing at all!

·       Sort out your wardrobe

De-cluttering, minimising and organising your wardrobe can really make a difference to how you start your days, seeing mess and clutter can make you feel weighed down.

3. LIFESTYLE & HOBBY-RELATED GOALS

·       Learn to play an instrument

Ever caught yourself singing to a pop song? Maybe you’ve played ‘air guitar’ to an imaginary audience at your dream concert? In any case, consider making a resolution to take lessons and learn that instrument for real.

·       Take up art (drawing, painting etc)

Apart from artistic expression and being an outlet for your creative juices, art can also have very therapeutic benefits and inspire new ideas.

·       Learn how to sew or knit

Although stereotypically associated with older generations, sewing and knitting can not only be calming, but can also have very obvious benefits and even potential business opportunities if you end up making trendy outfits or accessories that people want to buy.

·       Take up photography

If you’ve always fancied yourself as a bit of a pro, today is as good a day as any to try and take it up professionally as there are many online and in-person courses (free options too) to turn your amateur obsession into a semi-professional art form.

·       Join a sports club

Hockey, netball, running and of course football, plus so much more. Apart from the obvious health benefits, joining a sports club can be a good way to socialise outside of your usual circles and also improve on your sporting skills.

SUMMARY

It’s never too late (or early) to make new resolutions or to set yourself new goals to achieve. Making your goals realistic and setting smaller ‘sub’ targets will help you stick to them over a longer period of time.

Another tactic you could try, is to phrase them as actions rather than an end target, for example, if you wanted to learn a new language, you could say “I will do two Italian lessons per week” instead of just saying “I will learn Italian”.

Remember to keep track of your progress, but don’t stress of feel guilty, resolutions and goals are all about trying and learning new things along the way towards discovering what truly excites you.
